'Archetypal Sculpture - Confronting the Jungian Shadow via Telepresence and Symbolisation'
is a research project that explores Carl Jung's theory of the unconscious. From this theory, this project specialises on the 'shadow archetype' which refers to any part of the personality that one tends to hide and is reluctant to express publicly, as it does not align with the persona that the individual puts up to face the world.
is a research project that explores Carl Jung's theory of the unconscious. From this theory, this project specialises on the 'shadow archetype' which refers to any part of the personality that one tends to hide and is reluctant to express publicly, as it does not align with the persona that the individual puts up to face the world.
While according to Jungian theory, everyone has this 'filter', and it is necessary to maintain healthy social relations, one must be careful not to allow this process to become so automatic that the shadow is not only hidden from the external world but also from the individual themself - and in turn, a blindspot within the individual's personality may be created.
This project makes use of a journal written in an automatic writing format in an attempt to expose and express the themes from this shadow archetype to the self. Once these themes are identified, each theme is visualised as an abstract symbol and placed in relation to the other themes - eventually this amalgamates into sculpture that externalises the shadow as a visual language that only its creator may understand, analyse and confront.
A virtual environment was then developed using Blender and Unreal Engine 5 for the sculptures to exist in an immersive space that compliments the topic of interest.
